Soil Of Ignorance is a good grindcore band, these guys don’t do anything outside of the genre, but what they do they do well. 2020 a very active and positive year for them, first they released a split with legends Excruciating Terror and then first full length! Today I will try to cover all parts of this long-awaited album.

The cover art is built out of all the grindcore standards, we have a massive collage that covers sharp themes like religion, war, greed, poverty and animal rights, and so on. Indeed, that is the base of the madness that surrounds us. These (and many other) themes affect us (mostly in a negative way), that is so fucking wrong, that is cancer that is killing us, and I believe that we must fight with that shit!

and I believe that we must fight with that shit! Hmm… How should I start? The grinds on this album are just so fucking harsh! While being totally brutal and out of control, the songs are definitely not without structure, and some songs really get stuck into your head with their insidious hooks. Production and the sound have perfect rawness. There is not a lot to say about the bass. Yes, it loud and really distorted but the guitar is cluttering its vibration in a lot of moments. Speaking about guitar, this is the most annoying (in a good way) instrument on this album, ha! It’s really fuzzy and sounds fucking crushing. Sometimes you can’t even hear what riff is actually playing due to all the distortion. Actually, guys managed to find a good balance (okay almost find) between all instruments. The drum section is strong as fuck, blast beats sound savage and heavy. The same can be said about the vocals. This work is very strong and the guys didn`t fucked up! If you love crushing grindcore with good sound, the “Stop The Madness” is a perfect choice! (*Review from HERE ).¡

Repulsion is a grindcore band from Flint, Michigan, founded in 1984. Matt Olivo and Scott Carlson, with bassist Sean MacDonald, formed Tempter in 1984, a metal act covering Bay Area thrash metal bands, such as Slayer and Metallica. The group's sound became increasingly infused with hardcore punk when Phil Hines, of Flint hardcore punk band Dissonance, joined as a drummer. They juggled band names, first renaming themselves Ultraviolence and then Genocide before recording their first demo in 1984. In spite of their growing popularity in the underground Genocide struggled to survive and faced difficulty maintaining a consistent lineup. The activity of the band has been: 1984-1988, 1990–1993 and since 2003 until present.

FILTHY CHRISTIANS

Fortunately this album came out in the days when I was really into crustcore and grindcore. There weren’t that much bands releasing full length albums in those styles which could be bought anywhere so Filthy Christans’ ‘Mean’ immediately reached my collection thanks to Earache records. Years later I must however conclude that despite still being a good album, it is not one of the all time grindcore classics. It’s still a well known name from those days but the album has lost much of its impact.

Whereas now in the 21st century the grindcore scene is a matter of quantity, the competition in ’87-‘90 was hard in terms of quality. Of course we had Carcass and Napalm Death from the U.K., Agathocles from Belgium, Old Lady Drivers and Terrorizer from the U.S. and the remembrance of Fear Of God and Genocide/Repulsion hauting all those bands. Say what you will but all those bands had something highly characteristic in their sound. Be it compositionally, vocally or whatever. They all were easily recognisable. Filthy Christians did indeed have more hardcore punk influences in their sound (just like Napalm Death they were a punk band earlier) than the average grindcore band but didn’t go as far as sounding like Extreme Noise Terror, Intense Degree or Heresy.

Filthy Christians mixed crustcore with grindcore but a lot of songs lacked character - as said – compared to contemporary competition. Mostly this was because of the generic grunting vocals (which sound much better on other FC releases) and the rather tame production this album had. There are some great riffs here and there but the foggy guitar sound really damages the intensity of the material. A real stand out track here is “Party & Fight For Your Right?” with its catchy clean intro and great breaks. Quite logical this song made it unto the Grindcrusher compilation album.

Now lyrically the album wasn’t really on a par with Napalm Death who already had a slightly more philosophical and eloquent approach to their preachings nor did Filthy Christians go for the full scale horror and gore attack Carcass and Repulsion had explored earlier. Just like the early works from Agathocles, Filthy Christians combined some gore lyrics with pubescent left wing dogma, PC lyrics about drunk driving and statements about the hardcord punk scene during the late eighties. Nothing new under the sun.

As a whole though not much songs really stand out and the album can best be listened to as a whole. When doing so it is highly enjoyable. But honesty compells me to say it’s more sentiment than sheer quality.

Single minded is a term that would aptly describe Gridlink's approach to creating music, a mix of mathcore and grindcore. Velocity, precision, purity - these are the tenets of their persona, combined and compacted into parcels of explosive sound-violence. In conjunction with eloquently confrontational lyrics, Gridlink's musical missives manage to utterly dominate the airspace they occupy while elevating the consciousness of the listener to supreme levels of ecstatic anxiety and heightened sensory awareness. This is the music of the apocalyptic-computer-future-world as delivered by first hand-witnesses to the horde of humanity as it draws ever closer to the edge of oblivion - a cautionary battering to capture the attention of those who might wish to move in the opposite direction. As in the words of George Orwell (who might as well have been describing the aesthetic of Gridlink's sonic knifings) "If you want a picture of the future imagine a boot stomping on a human face--forever."

While made up of musical luminaries who have proved their mettle in other much lauded musical outfits (Discordance Axis, Mortalized, Human Remains, Kill the Client, Burnt by the Sun, Hayaino Daisuki, etc), this is hardly a necessary qualifier in the face of a ferocious musical accomplishment such as Orphan. While possessing the energy, aggression, and overall focus of its predessor (2008's Amber Grey), the songs contained herein provide an ever denser and more nuanced musical assault combining short bursts of accelerated thrash, blinding passages of helicopter blasting, monochromatic smears of near-noise, and the alien howls of singer Jon Chang. In a realm of perpetrators veiled by smokescreen tactics of studio trickery and trapped in herd minded musical and socio-political maneuvering, Gridlink provide a much needed counterpoint in which sincerity, determination and artful execution triumph finally and fully.
