Gorilla Biscuits' "Start Today" is one of the most influential records in hardcore. Hailing from NYC, Gorilla Biscuits carved a niche within the NY hardcore scene. Blending the aggression and energy of bands like Agnostic Front with a sense of melody likened to Dag Nasty, Gorilla Biscuits still stands as a unique reference point for many hardcore bands that have come after them.

Backtrack was a hardcore band from Long Island, NY. The band was active between 2008 and 2019. The first blip on the radar was their 2008 Demo tape, which got them picked up by 6131 records where they would go on to release another EP called Deal With the Devil in 2009.

Their debut album Darker Half was then released in 2011 through Reaper Records. The two following full-length albums Lost in Life (2014) and Bad to My World would then be released by Bridge Nine Records, a household name in the US Hardcore scene. The band announced their breakup in 2019, signing off with a final tour through North America, Asia and Australia. They played their last show on November 30, 2019 in Amityville, NY. Stylistically, the band played a modernized version of the NYHC style pioneered by bands such as Sick Of It All or Madball. At the time of the breakup, the band consisted of James Vitalo (vocals), Ricky Singh (guitar), Chris Smith (guitar), Danny Smith (bass), and John T. Lopez (drums).

Critics often default to breathless hyperbole when discussing Nirvana's Nevermind. Can you blame them? The band's 1991 sophomore album single-handedly revolutionized rock music at the dawn of a new decade, a zeitgeist shift whose scale has not been matched in the decades since. It distilled a generation's worth of suburban ennui and despair into a 36-minute  scruffy blitzkrieg, turning bandleader Kurt Cobain into first a prophet and later a martyr. It also marked a windfall for every department store with an excess stock of oversized flannel shirts.

This commercial  succes, launched the beggining of the end... "the death of rock music" during the 90s decade. Nirvana's second album still sounds like a monstrous changing of the tide all these years later. Part of it had to do with timing, but a lot of it comes down to the principals involved in the making of Nevermind: producer Butch Vig, mixer Andy Wallace and the band members, all of whom execute Kurt Cobain's excellent songs with equal measures of sensitivity and volume. By the mid-'90s it was hard to find a hard-rock album that didn't bear a trace of Nirvana's masterpiece. In some ways the genre never recovered; it needed to adapt to move on. And for that we can thank Nevermind. This download here below includes the remixed and remastered version of 2021.

ROTTEN MIND

"rat city dog boy"
Year:  2020
Country:  Sweden
City:  Uppsala
Label:  Lövely
Format:  LP
Tracks:  11
Time:  26 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Garage Rock

ROTTEN MIND are one of the more impressive punk acts to come out of Sweden in the last decade. In a country that already boasts a plethora of excellent punk acts, ROTTEN MIND have made a solid reputation for blending classic punk with elements of post-punk and new wave, making for a heady mix of great music that has served them well over the course of their first three full lengths. Now, with the release of their fourth album, Rat City Dog Boy, the band are not only embracing their classic sound, but also throwing a variety of new influences into the mix, resulting in an eclectic and extremely catchy album that it’s incredibly hard not to love.

City Rats starts this album with an energetic piece of solid Punk; it proves to be a brief, yet brilliant, way for ROTTEN MIND to kick the album off. Burn for You follows in much the same vein, with catchy guitars and memorable, singalong vocals creating a speed-driven classic punk sound tinged with some indie flourishes that work well together and give this song a great sound throughout. Whereas the previous two songs were razor sharp and intense from start to finish, Nothing Left to Give proves to be a much more mid-tempo affair with brooding leads, authoritative drumming and a more measured approach, which proves to be a refreshing change of pace.

Beat of the Street makes use of more adventurous and prominent lead guitar melodies and a fast, razor sharp sound, combining the pace that defined the opening tracks with the expansive sound of its predecessor, making for an epic yet rabid piece of music. I’ve Got No Time, despite running for less than two minutes, stands out significantly, blending tight punk rhythms with a brooding, hard rock feel that not only stands out in all the right ways, but gives this album a more diverse sound. You’ll Never See Me Again is anthemic with some solid Indie elements and plenty of energetic drumming, which gives this song a really lively and invigorating feel right off the bat.

Tame Me is a brief yet brilliant blast of bombastic punk with some thunderous guitars and driving vocals. despite it’s length, it certainly leaves its mark on the album. Fyrisån blends great aspects of New Wave with a tight, rock edge. The more adventurous, melody driven leads really benefit the song, carrying the music throughout and making for a brooding and haunting change of pace. Negative Space takes the music back down a faster route, with jangling guitar hooks and authoritative drumming combining to make a lighter sound that still manages to pack a significant punch. The vocals really begin to come into their own, and the listener gets treated to some of the more varied vocal performances on the record, another element that helps to elevate this track and make it stand out.

Not One of You follows in much the same vein as Tame Me. A solid rhythmic undercurrent provides plenty of musical weight to the mix, with the leads taking on a denser and more doom-laden sound as well. It’s a great, climactic exclamation point on this album that leads into the albums final song, And Now It’s All Gone, perfectly. This final offering is a far cry from the rest of the music on the album, stripping back most of the distortion in favour of a subdued vocal and acoustic guitars, which are the sole building blocks of this particular song. It may be a fairly minimal affair, and with a much more primitive sound than all the other tracks on here, but it acts as a nice pallet cleanser that brings the album to a close on a surprising, yet still interesting, note.

Rat City Dog Boy is an excellent album that blends a variety of musical elements together while making sure that none of the music ends up being stale. It’s clear that ROTTEN MIND are starting to shift away from the more classic punk orientated sound which defined their first few records with the music becoming far more eclectic and adventurous, whilst still maintaining that ethereal production quality that makes their music so impressive and memorable (Review by: Danny Sanderson )

If you thought David Comes to Life was as epic as punk could get, Dose Your Dreams proved you wrong. If you then thought Dreams was the top of the prog-punk mountain, you were wrong again. Fucked Up’s newest entry in their zodiac series (until now, a series of extended 12-inch maxi-singles), Year of the Horse is four full sides of psychedelic epic punk story telling. As with all the Fucked Up concept records, the plot is complex and the record comes with a libretto that fills you in, ala the classic Italian operas. Very roughly speaking, the album is about a horse named Perceval that breaks free from the clutches of death and confronts the forces of the universe itself, other mystical horses and witches. Got that? No? That’s fine.

This record is crafted to be massive and not just sonic chewing gum (though simple, thumbs nappers are cool too) and to that end, it requires study and repeat listens to “fully “ grasp- and you won’t ever fully grasp it because with Fucked Up’s more recent King Crimson/Pink Floydian adventures, the record is just ambiguous enough to raise questions instead of fully answering them.

What’s particularly neat here is that record masterminds Mike Haliechuk and Jonah Falco have forged their most diverse and chameleon-onic sound bed to date. This record flips from Integrity style smashing to Metallica thrashing to Medieval lute play to robo-soul to goth Morricone to Sleep homage to something that sounds like slowed down trip hop, all in one continuous bleeding journey. The dozen plus guests here add to the sonic warp-sphere making this album a galaxy unto its own, and it also makes it a very unpredictable record. There is the risk of the record being too disjointed or too hoity-toity, but that never seems to happen. Why? Maybe the band stays on a theme just long enough before jumping to the next toadstool. Or, maybe it’s because every time the record approaches the indulgence of the worst of ‘70s prog, long running vocalist Damian Abraham comes in and smashes the thing back to earth, as aided by straight up hardcore guitar pummeling.

The album sounds like it wasn’t necessarily planned in advance. Rather, it seems that as the crew kept stacking ideas on top of each other, more and more ideas grew. That can result in a real mess of a record, or, as with records like Exile on Main Street or London Calling, it can result in something truly special when the band is in the zone. Now in their 20th year, Fucked Up is still in the zone (*Review by John Gentile ).

David Comes to Life is the third studio album by Canadian hardcore punk band Fucked Up. It was released on June 7, 2011 in North America and June 6, 2011 elsewhere on Matador Records in CD and double LP formats. David Comes to Life is an 18-song epic in four acts. It became Fucked Up's first charting album in the United States ranking at number 83 on the Billboard 200.

The album is a rock opera set in 1970s and 1980s England. The story involves unreliable narrators and meta-narrative plot devices. Drummer Jonah Falco described the album as a love story between the title character David and a girl named Veronica.

The Chemistry of Common Life is the second full-length studio album by Canadian hardcore punk band Fucked Up. It was released on October 7, 2008 on Matador Records in CD and double LP formats and on Welfare Records in Reel-to-reel Audio Tapes. The statement on the label's site describes it as "an expansive epic about the mysteries of birth, death, and the origins of life (and re-living)".

The album is named after a book by James F. W. Johnston, which (among other things) describes hallucinogenic properties of mushrooms and plants. The title for the track "The Peaceable Kingdom" is taken from a famous painting by American folk-painter Edward Hicks. The cover art depicts the phenomenon of Manhattanhenge. The album won the 2009 Polaris Music Prize.
