Initiate is a SoCal-based that cooks up hardcore that has a lot to love about it. It's moshy, fast, angry-sounding, and just when you least expect it to be, melodic. "The band’s sound is honestly difficult to sum up in simply one description," guitarist Alec tells No Echo. "I think there are many differing a aspects of music that embody Initiate, but I guess the one underlying theme is that there’s always a sense of melody despite whether it’s fast or heavy. We all love lots of different varied music that I think adds to an interesting conglomerate for our sound."

Lavender is the newest release from the band, and it's easily their strongest batch of material to date. As I stated in the intro to this piece, the California group check off many of the boxes you want out of this kind of music, but they've clearly spent focused time on making everything flow in a powerful way: "The inspiration for the new record stemmed from a lot of different things," Alec explains. "The band was evolving musically as a whole therefore it felt right for the next release to be congruent with that. I drew inspiration from a lot of different things for the record, a lot of them being early '90s NYHC bands and also CAHC staples like Carry On. There’s also a big metal influence as well with the idea of the instrumental break near the end of the record as well as different riffs that pay homage to old '80s/'90s metal, which I love.

I ask Initiate vocalist Crystal about some of the lyrics on the new EP. "The record's title track, 'Lavender,' was inspired by Alice Walker’s book, In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens," the singer reveals. "There’s some other play on words in that song that I’ll leave for people to find on their own. I was introduced to the book by my professor, Dr. Anne Marie Mingo. She encouraged the class to make most of our academic sources by works of women. Read about the authors of our books and articles. Pay attention to what they’re doing. I had never intentionally taken my academics to that level and I became so in love with learning in a way I had never done so (*Review by No Echo ).

They call themselves a crust punk band, but Depopulation Department actually isn't as harsh nor burning as that would suggest. There's a lot of speed metal in the riffwork, there isn't a massive amount of slams, and the vocals hold the occasional melody here and there. Life Kills only comes right in under twenty minutes, and is a digestible ride that isn't anything outside the box, but also didn't leave me wanting more. The vocals actually surprised me at times with how high up they would get. See "Collateral Damage" or "Wounds Of War" to get a taste of what the bands finest tunes are. Anybody into the likes of Discharge or The Exploited should enjoy.

INFANT ANNIHILATOR

"the battle of yaldabaoth"

Tracks:  13
Time:  60 min.

Infant Annihilator - what a band amirite? The media perception and the perception of people who know this band exists in the first place is just very random and all over the place. Some people hate this band, some people like this band. Their first two albums have had their fair share of attention, both good and bad, (mainly bad according to some people), but after a few years of some unpredictable and interesting music, we got a new album here!

"The Battle of Yaldabaoth" released on September 11th, 2019 (which is Aaron Kitcher's Birthday by the way) is something new and fresh; a more heavy, matured, and improved sound. The single "Three Bastards" provided a peek at the newer and latest sound of the band, and it was pretty good, but the whole album is even better. It's really a huge improvement! Their old stuff isn't bad, just saying this album is more advanced and thought out compared to the previous releases. I honestly wasn't expecting this album to be as good as it is, but this is indeed some quality stuff. My birthday is also September 11th, so to have a shared birthday with Aaron Kitcher and on top of that, a new and improved IA album too? What a great gift!

Every area of this album is good from the songwriting, songs, vocals, instrumentation, etc. Nothing disappoints. This album has the same formulas used in older IA albums, but with something else more to accompany it. It's pretty obvious the band has taken some influence from other related bands such as Rings of Saturn and others. More intricate and thought out songwriting, drum patterns, guitar parts, and more expansive vocals. Of course you still got the trademark IA vocals which is the low guttural bark-burp-type growls, and the scene band-black metal sounding highs. But on this record they're even better. It's obvious Dickie spent some time arranging and composing the vocals for this record, and he did a good job, that's for sure. The general sound on this album is also just magnificent. The drums don't sound nearly too processed, not everything sounds too buried, this is more of an open atmosphere record, and every second of it is good.

I also like how they incorporated some strange little small parts in some songs too. Tracks like "Plaguebearer" and "Paedophilic Supremacy" do this very well. Plaguebearer has some chuggy Meshuggah type stuff in the 1st half of the song, and it's groovy and moves the song along pretty great. Paedophilic Supremacy starts off with some furiousity but then slowly descends into something mello. I guess you could call this some jazz-type stuff (I guess?) I don't know for sure, but the stuff that track does it pretty cool and unique. These are signs that the band has again, improved with this record. Can't find anything to complain about if I'm being honest. This release is a smooth and cool listen that doesn't have any bad parts.

Great job guys. Another cool album, and something newer too. The album art is unique, the songwriting has more oomph, epic title, everything has increased in quality quite a bit, just every single thing fits in here and works. Definitely one of the best of 2019 so far.

Overall, this album is good. Even if you're one of those people who have nothing but hate for Infant Annihilator, you have to admit that The Battle of Yaldabaoth is something of improvement and betterness. Take the time to listen to this in full, don't smear this as some "infant annihilator sucks and so does their new album deathcore sucks" bullcrap. If you're one of those people, please just stop. This is a good listen. 2019 has been a great year for metal, and a new album like this coming from a band like Infant Annihilator, you should at least give this a little something of approval (*Review by HERE )

Antigama is mostly a band that releases split albums, as they have more of those than full-lengths. I have no idea why that is, but it seems to be a by-product of the grind scene, with every band seemingly doing splits with every other grind band in existence. Still, between all that splitting, Antigama have release their fifth album, titled Warning. It was always going to be a big ask to overcome the brilliance that was Resonance, so how exactly did they do?

Well, let’s see here. From the get-go, the first thing you’ll hear is the production. The second thing you’ll hear is the sound of the drums, particularly the snare drum. Sounds different, doesn’t it? Well, different is right, but a positive or negative difference is a judgement call. Personally, I don’t think it sounds as good as it did on Resonance, but at the same time, it sounds more real, so I guess the two eventually cancel each other out. Almost. Anyway, as “Disconnected” blasts from your speakers/headphones, you’ll notice that it’s already sounding a lot more chaotic than most of the material on their previous album, and that trend persists throughout. It’s almost like they took most of their inspiration from Resonance, yet took slices from Discomfort, as well. For those that have not heard Discomfort, it was a chaotic blend of grind that was always teetering on the verge of a complete mess, but never actually fell. Here, they seem to have honed in on the skill of not turning the music into a frenzied pandemonium, so they’ve found a good balance between the two. I actually enjoy this. If Warning was created eight years ago, it would not have sounded the way it does.

The stop/start riffing is still present, but it’s not as obvious as it was before. It appears at 0:27 on “Jealousy,” and it sounds really good. The main riff in “War” is a little like that, as well, and it is one of my favourite tracks from this album. In fact, most of the riffs in that song are catchy as hell. The shuffle rhythm in “Lost Skull” has more of a poppy feel, but it works well.

The drumming is top-notch, much like it was before, but one thing I noticed was that the smaller toms are not used as clearly as they were on Resonance. I can still hear them pop up from time to time, but there’s no rolling fills any more. This is a bit of a shame, really, because I enjoyed him exploiting the shit out of them. Bring back the smaller toms! I guess the reason for their omission is that Warning isn’t as central on the drumming as Resonance was, but dammit, bring them back, I say!

What was slightly disappointing for me was the final track “Black Planet,” because, much like on the album Zeroland, it’s an ambient track that goes on for a long time. I was hoping for a long grind song, but was sorely disappointed when I realised that was not going to occur. I will admit that “Black Planet” is quite bleak, and does make you feel alone, if that was its intentions, of course, and is a better close than “Zeroland” could ever hope for. The same can’t be said for the filler track “Paganini Meets Barbapapex.” That is really choppy, and I wouldn’t blame you if you pressed the skip button there.

The vocalist is a new guy, yet he sounds just like the old guy! He has slightly more range, and employs more of a harsher yell, but other than that, he’s basically the same vocalist in a different skin. No complaints there.

So, there’s some really cool songs on here, such as “War,” and “You Have The Right To Remain Violent,” but overall, I think it’s ever-so-slightly weaker than Resonance is. I would call it a sideways step for Antigama – not exactly better than before, but I can’t fault their performance. If their next album is like Warning, well, I definitely won’t be protesting. Chalk another winner up for this great, and still improving, band.
