Colorado-based thrashers Havok are back. After a whirlwind yet rewarding cycle for 2017’s Conformicide effort, the high-octane outfit have emerged from the studio victorious with their new album, V. Engineered, mixed, mastered by Mark Lewis (Cannibal Corpse, The Black Dahlia Murder, etc.) and showcasing stunning artwork by Eliran Kantor (Testament, Hatebreed, etc.), V will be released worldwide on May 1, 2020 via Century Media Records. Havok’s guitarist/vocalist David Sanchez explains about V: "A lot of experimentation went into the writing and recording of ‘V.’ The album offers the same intensity that we’re known for, but with a few twists that may surprise people. The music is dense with lots of different intertwining parts and we’re beyond excited to release our best-sounding record to date."

No Right are a four-piece hardcore band from San Francisco, California that have been around since 2016. They're a straight edge band that play a ferocious style of hardcore with a strong metalcore influence. They incorporate down-tuned, chugging riffs with shots of dissonance and complex rhythms into their mosh-friendly aggression machine. The vocals are throat-shredding and vicious, while keeping the lyrics discernible. Lyrical themes in their lyrics use to be usual in these kind of bands: animal liberation, environmentalism, anti-war, veganism, drugs free, etc. Here below you can to listen to their two EP's ensemble.

light, simple, basic and direct punk rock with few distorted guitars and lyrical themes charged of humour, parodies and jokes about: politics, social issues and personal issues. Somewhere between lineal Ramones, humoristic The Dickies and melodic The Jam. Hard to believe in 2020 there are still people able to make this kind of music extremely simple and amazing, at the same time. Good job!

A highlight is the brutal ‘Night Of The Witch’. The fourth track not only features influence from the spooky as fuck horror flick The Witch, but also has axe-man Eric Peterson stepping up to the microphone and dropping some evil as shit and pathetic "black metal" style vocals. In the mix is Alex Skolnick’s trademark mad shredding guitar work and, I kid you not, a Theremin. But it’s 2020 and what’s old is new, so if you want to throw up something fresh nothing touches a Theremin … (I’ll see myself out). The band throw a musical curveball with ‘City Of Angels’. Shifting away from their usual sound they venture into territory I’ve not heard from the Berkley thrashers before. Peterson and Skolnick’s guitars take on a sludgy early Black Sabbath vibe, Steve DiGorgio’s bass is dirty, menacing and heavy as fuck. Speaking of menacing, Chuck Billy spits some deliciously gruesome lyrics re-telling the story of the Nightstalker killer. ‘Ishtar’s Gate’ sees the band back in familiar territory digging deep into Babylonian history. One thing I’ve always loved about metal bands who take influence from history is it gives me an excuse to learn about places and points in history I’d previously never knew about. Back in the old days I’d go to the library with a bunch of lyrics in my head and discover new worlds of savagery and wonders. Now I find myself I spending an afternoon disappearing down a Wikipedia rabbit hole while Testament thrashes in my head. History class was never this fucking heavy or cool. This album is as unrelenting as it is heavy. ‘Curse Of Osirs’ is a delve into Egyptian mythology at break neck speed, with Peterson’s devilishly evil vocals once again perfectly complementing Chuck Billy’s gruff yell. It honestly feels like I’ve been hit by a freight train. Thirteen albums in and these thrash metal legends are still delivering the goods (*Review Garet Williams ).

ALICE COOPER

"welcome to my nightmare"
Year:  1975
Label:  Warner
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  11
Time:  40 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Hard Rock

Welcome to My Nightmare is the debut solo studio album by American rock musician Alice Cooper, released on February 28, 1975. It is his only album for the Atlantic Records label in North America; in the rest of the world, it was released on the ABC subsidiary Anchor Records (also his only album for that label). Welcome to My Nightmare is a concept album. Played in sequence, the songs form a journey through the nightmares of a child named Steven. The album inspired the Alice Cooper: The Nightmare TV special, a worldwide concert tour in 1975, and his Welcome to My Nightmare concert film in 1976. The ensuing tour was one of the most over-the-top excursions of that era. Most of Lou Reed's band joined Cooper for this record.

The cover artwork was created by Drew Struzan for Pacific Eye & Ear. Rolling Stone would later rank it ninetieth on the list of the "Top 100 Album Covers of All Time". Famed horror film star Vincent Price provided a monologue in the song "The Black Widow". The original version of "Escape" was recorded by the Hollywood Stars for their shelved 1974 studio album Shine Like a Radio, which was finally released in 2013.[4][5] The ballad "Only Women Bleed", released as a single, is a song originally composed by guitarist Dick Wagner for his late-1960s band the Frost, with a new title provided by Cooper and revised lyrics written by Wagner and Cooper. The song "Escape" was a rewrite of a song by the Hollywood Stars from the album Shine Like a Radio – The Great Lost 1974 Album. The remastered CD version adds three alternate version bonus tracks.

Expanding from his Detroit city rock roots, Cooper has experimented with a number of musical styles, including glam rock, hard rock and heavy metal, and also alternative rock just in these two albums here reviewed. He is credited with helping to shape the sound and look of heavy metal, and has been described as the artist who "first introduced horror imagery to rock and roll, and whose stagecraft and showmanship have permanently transformed the genre". He is also known for his witty and humorous personality offstage, with The Rolling Stone Album Guide calling him the world's most "beloved heavy metal entertainer". Away from music, Cooper is a film actor, a golfing celebrity, a restaurateur, and, since 2004, a popular radio DJ with his classic rock show Nights with Alice Cooper. In 2014 guitarist Nita Strauss joined Alice Cooper and gave to his band a new force and energy. Benefit concerts and compromise with several social causes, are also another Alice Cooper faces, among their music, makeup, etc.

The Filth and the Fury is a 2000 British rockumentary film directed by Julien Temple. It follows the story of punk rock pioneers the Sex Pistols from their humble beginnings in London's Shepherd's Bush to their fall at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. It is considered a continuation of Temple's first documentary centered on the band, titled The Great Rock and Roll Swindle, but acts as an opportunity for the surviving members of the group to tell their side of the story. Soundtrack to the Julien Temple movie: "The Filth And The Fury". Features 8-page booklet with pictures, quotes and credits.

Sweden has a penchant for producing some great skate-punk bands. Millencolin, Satanic Surfers, No Fun At All, Randy, Astream, Adhesive.... They've been also known to produce some decent hardcore bands (ok, legendary - Refused anyone?) Raised Fist fits in quite well. Raised Fist started out as a typical hardcore band, recording a good EP in You're Not Like Me, yet nothing that able to force it's way into a congested American hardcore scene. Stronger Than Ever, the follow-up EP gave them a bit more of an identity, as they infused a bit more melody, along with more agression. Finally, after a long wait, they recorded a full album. Fuel is a bit of a paradox. It contains some of their slowest material, as well as some of their heaviest. They continue in the direction taken by Stronger Than Ever. The album starts off with a bit of a strange song in "Monumental", which changes pace & tone at least three times before it is finished. The next song, "Reversal", begins as a very average song, and ends with a guitar riff that, while not very technically difficult (any hack with a guitar could play it), is simply astounding, so good that when playing it live, they decide not employ the accompanying lyrics, and just play it as a solo (quite effectively I might add). "Reversal" is followed by "Pretext", one of my all-time favourite songs. This song alone is worth the price of admission. Probably their slowest song, yet one of the most agressive. The screamed lyrics over palm-muted guitar makes you wish you could understand even one fucking word either of the the singers says.

The problem with the album is after "Pretext", with the next eight songs (making eleven in total, saving you some mental math). These are all very good songs, and any one of them would be a standout on a compilation, yet they lack the originality that the first three have. They all employ the same sort of musical devices - palm muting, start/stop choruses, tying together different segments with killer bass lines....in much the same manner. This all adds up to some great head-bangin' fun, but you tend to lose track of where you are in the CD.

I can't think of an appropriate way to wrap this up, so I'll just finish by saying that if you're into bands like Snapcase, or the heavier Boy Sets Fire stuff, or just hardcore music in general, you'll definately want to pick this up. Even if you're not, but are looking for something new, give it a shot...you never know.... (*Review by Layawayplan ).

"from the north"

Label:  Epitaph

Tracks:  11
Time:  30 min.
Genre:  rock

Brilliant, brutal and blunt. In a world of skewed social standards, the organised chaos of hardcore has never felt so relevant. Punk legends Raised Fist have once again turned their hands to their own brand of punk that exemplifies vitriol at its catchiest and imitable. Spitting venom and face-melting riffs in every direction, ‘From The North’ breaks 2015 wide open and vows to seek revenge for last year’s wrongdoings.
Owing their existence to the lyrics of Rage Against The Machine, Raised Fist have consistently translated the aggression of their peers and their 21-year experience into some of the catchiest punk going. The Swedish five-piece has matured with age in all the best ways, compressing the relentless energy and rage of all their previous releases into their sixth studio offering ‘From The North’. There’s no stopping hardcore, at least, as long as these guys have any say in it.

“Let it be said, they should be fucking dead”, screeches vocalist Alexander Hagman, hurling lucid threats of “time is running out for you, my friend” to demonstrate the most menacing lyrical content to storm the hardcore scene in recent years. The record’s defining line “circling like fucking maniacs” from ‘Depression’ will doubtlessly blow apart any venue on their upcoming European tour. Accomplishing the feat of showcasing each band member in turn to which hardcore should aspire, the beautifully chaotic ‘Gates’ allows Modin’s relentless drums to translate a livid frustration rivalled only by Tikkanen and Holmgren’s tricksy leading lines throughout.

Anthemic album-stealer ‘We Will Live Forever’ takes matters into its own hands, combining seemingly effortless defiance with raucous, roof-raising riffs. The supercharged vocals of ‘Flow’ play a timeless game of cat and mouse with the earth-shattering opening line of ‘Man On Earth’, completing an 11-track battle cry for the perpetually downtrodden.

Cementing their message that “we still don’t give a fuck about the gig you’re playing”, ‘From The North’ raises both fists and yells against the social state, making waves hardcore has forgotten it was capable of. Raised Fist have raised the bar incomprehensibly high for 2015 – your move, Stick To Your Guns (*Review by Stepan).
