"misery rites"

Lyrical themes:  social issues, politics
Genre:  rock
Style:        Grindcore

"When it comes to grindcore, few bands these days can top the overwhelming barrage of wrath and aggression unloaded on the listener/spectator by Calgary’s WAKE. In a career spanning a mere seven years, this Canadian unit of aural assassins have brought terror and war to crowds all over the northern hemisphere, destroying venues across Europe and North America on multiple occasions, and establishing them selves as an infamous and unstoppable killing machine when it comes to performing live. In this sense the band’s name seems to perfectly match their nature within the live environment: leave nothing standing - level everything in an endless wake of terror and destruction. But WAKE are far from being only and aural cataclysm restricted to the live environment, quite the opposite, as the band has released a string of albums and splits that speak for them selves, and are just another horrifying statement of the violence and sheer aggression which nests inside the soul of this band, who mix grindcore with elements and influences such as: math rock, metalcore, sludge, etc.

The band is a concept project based around a post apocalyptic earth reclaimed by nature. It shares this narrative with the band Archivist. Their songs are very long, huge, with complicated structures and constant rhythmic changes. Lyrically the band has an strong CRASS inspiration, dealing subjects such as: internationalism, ecologism, pacifism, anti-consumerism and anarchism.

Country:  Russia

The band was formed in december of 2005 and included representatives of a three cities - Moscow, St. Petersburg and Ryazan. They are one of the few bands which exists on the territory of the former USSR, which does not copy popular western groups, but plays tough, acute social, daring music. Guys never wrote vague, non-committal texts. They always expressed their opinion about the things that happen in the city and country they live in the most clear way. They played already over 150 gigs, after lot of shows in post-USSR they have repeatedly traveled to Western Europe for benefit tours (Germany 2007, Germany 2008, Germany-France 2008, Bulgaria 2009, Europe tour 2009, two Europe tours 2010 and Siempre Antifascista Festival 2012 in Berlin as quasi reunion-gig). In every city in every country where they performed, they organized demonstrations of various films about the life of the russian underground and domestic antifa subculture, and arranged work-shops and debates devoted to those problems which subcultures and contercultures are concerned. What We Feel has always support the antifascist and autonomus scene.

EMMURE

"look at yourself"
Year:  2017

Label:  Sharp tone
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  13
Time:  45 min.
Genre:  rock

Well. This was unexpected. After the immense disappointment of the new Suicide Silence "album", I never expected the mantle of best deathcore album of 2017 so far (in my opinion) to be taken up by Emmure. Look At Yourself, the bands 7th album, first with the new line-up (starring Josh Travis formerly of Glass Cloud and TTDTDE) was released on March 3rd on Sharptone Records, the new Sumerian for deathcore groups. The first track I want to dig into is Shinjuku Masterlord, which kicks off with an aggressive "I'm back!" as we delve into fairly typical riffs and vocals with some well done rapping by Mr Frankie Palmeri. Whilst this track and others like it don't really do anything different, the song is catchy, has a heavy breakdown etc. Smokey and Natural Born Killer, whilst heavy and somewhat catchy, don't have a lot of substance and depth, in part due to their short running time, which is probably my only real complaint of the record, but we'll get into that later. Flag of the Beast opens with screechy chords before kicking into high gear with Frankie roaring " I. Am. Your ***ing saviour!" I. Am. The ***ing Antichrist" which warrants an eye roll or 20. Ice Man Confessions opens with some ghostly notes and spoken word as it kicks into a chuggy, grooving chorus which is incredibly catchy. After that, the record starts to become old, but Torch and Gucci Prison, another of my favourite cuts, save the second half from becoming a glorified EP. I do have one glaring issue with the album, song length. The three 1 minute tracks could have easily been combined and the 2-3 minute running times don't give the tracks the breathing room I feel they needed. Gucci Prison is the longest track on the album, clocking in at just under 4 minutes, a rarity in Emmure's discography. Overall, I'd have to say that the leaving of the entire band in the back end of 2015 was exactly the boot up the ass Frankie needed to turn the band around. If this is the kind of quality we can expect from future releases, I'm going to start giving Emmure a lot more credit (*Review by John 7 ).
