2010 album from the Punk Rock veterans. Joe "Shithead" Keithley, Canada's godfather of Punk, has teamed with his cronies Floor Tom Jones (drums) and Dirty Dan Sedan (bass) for one of D.O.A.'s hardest-hitting albums yet. Talk - Action = 0 (not to be confused with the long-out-of-print 1991 live album Talk Minus Action Equals Zero) is the band's lucky 13th studio album and sees them returning to their roots; initial reports have drawn comparisons to D.O.A.'s classic first two albums: "something better change" and "hardcore '81". There's plenty of what you would expect from the boys - power, politics and humor - with a few unique twists thrown in just to keep the punks on their toes.

Despite this album can to remind a performance, live concert or similar event, it's just the opposite, another studio album issued in 2004 in their own label "Sudden Death" and recorded in their city Vancouver, Canada. Then and perhaps even nowadays, the album was quite unotticied. Perhaps is too long (almost fourty minutes), perhaps too much songs (fifhteen plus five covers in some issues)... several unknown reasons became this album quite forgotten and underrated. But the true is the recording is still quite good and continue with their typical rock and punk, this time also with few original ska influences.

Another good album to add to D.O.A. discography list, is this "Black spot" from 1995, which then had quite popularity and even "Virgin Records" (Universal Music) was interested in the release. With the pass of the years it got more and more acceptance. The fact is the album has been re-issued several times by different labels such as: "Sudden Death", "Essential Noise" and "Piggy Mot" with different cover, back and artwork. The true is despite all D.O.A albums keep certain similarity, this one is specially excellent and brilliant next to (for example) their "murder" from 1990. Punk and rock'n'roll mixed with intelligent and ironic lyrics about social issues, politics, etc.

D.O.A. is a band from Vancouver, Canada, started in 1978 as a political punk rock band which evolued with the pass of years to fast hardcore and also well produced hard rock in some albums and even they made heavy metal in their third album "Let's wreck the party" in 1985. After short hiatus of inactivity D.O.A. come back in 1990 with this album entitled "Murder", one of their most reputated work, issued several times, last one in 2017 on "Sudden Death Records" (own of D.O.A. singer Joey Keighley (AKA Joey Shithead) and "Alternative Tentacles (own of Jello Biafra, Dead Kennedys). This "Murder" usually is well accepted both by Punk and Metal scenes, and this is a newest remastered version of 2017, issued on CD and vinyl format.

No no.... you are not wrong, you read right, this is a D.O.A heavy metal, hard rock or A.O.R. (adult oriented rock) album. And the true is then, in 1985, the recording had quite succes in the Metal scene... but quite disappointment in the hardcore punk scene. No liars here, this is nor punk neither hardcore, but heavy metal with the usual D.O.A lyrics (politics, social issues, parodies, etc). Some people dislike at all, other has not a clear opinion, but more you listen to it, more you like it. They are still good musicians of course and the quality sound is more than good, it just depends of taste or music tolerance...

"I, shithead: a life in punk"
Year:  2003
Country:  Canada
City:  Vancouver
Format:  book
Pages:  237
Label:   Paperback
Author:  Joey Keithley
Style:        biography

Joey Keithley, aka Joey Shithead, founded legendary punk pioneers D.O.A. in 1978. Punk kings who spread counterculture around the world, they’ve been cited as influences by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Rancid and The Offspring; have toured with The Clash, The Ramones, The Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Nirvana, PiL, Minor Threat and others; and are the subject of two tribute albums. They are the band that introduced the term “hardcore” into punk lexicon and may have turned Nirvana’s lead singer Kurt Cobain onto a career in music. But punk is more than a style of music: it’s a political act, and D.O.A. have always had a social conscience, having performed in support of Greenpeace, women’s rape/crisis centres, prisoner’s rights, and antinuke and antiglobalization organizations. Twenty-five years later D.O.A. can claim sales of hundreds of thousands of copies of their 11 albums and tours in 30 different countries, and they are still going strong. I, Shithead is Joey’s personal, no-bullshit recollections of a life in punk, starting with the burgeoning punk movement and traversing a generation disillusioned with the status quo, who believed they could change the world: stories of riots, drinking, travelling, playing and conquering all manner of obstacles through sheer determination.

UNSEEN TERROR

"Human error"
Year:  1987
Country:  UK
City:  Birmingham
Label:  Earache
Format:  CD
Tracks:  20
Time:  30 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Grindcore

To set the record straight - The band was not named after the S.O.B track "Unseen Terror". This song from S.O.B came quite a while later. The band was actually named after Mitch was listening to the hardcore band Septic Death. Here is the story. The song "Terrorain" by this classic band has the lyric "Unseen Death - Terrorain". The Chernobyl disaster was very fresh in the minds of many at the time, and Mitch thought of the term "Unseen Terror", as the radiation in the air around the area of the disaster was invisible. It was literally an unseen terror. This short-lived, but highly influential group was founded in early 1986 by singer/guitarist Mitch Dickinson and Shane Embury. (Re: The album cover - They were later joined very briefly by Pete Giles (Harmony as One, Scalplock) on bass during the summer of 1987). Mitch and Shane wrote many songs together as a two piece band during mid 1986. These rehearsal tapes were distributed on an international level via the tape trading network of the time. These tapes caught the attention of Digby Pearson who later founded Earache Records. In the meantime, the band were invited to contribute two tracks to the compilation LP Diminished Responsibility, a 1987 Thrash compilation album, he group landed a record contract at Earache Records. The album Human Error was recorded by Mitch Dickinson and Shane Embury as a two piece band during September 1987. After their debut-album, Napalm Death drummer Mick Harris joined the band as singer. By then, Giles was no longer a member of the group as he did not really fit in. The band were invited to a recording session for BBC Radio One legend John Peel, and a one-off performance in Nottingham with bassist Wayne Aston. Incidentally, Wayne Aston did not appear on the Peel sessions recordings.

The Stranglers are a rock music group, formed on September 11, 1974 in Guildford, Surrey, England, United Kingdom. They were originally called The Guildford Stranglers and operated from an off-licence in the town. They also based themselves in the nearby village of Chiddingfold for a while. They began as a sinister sounding, hard-edged pub rock group, but eventually branched out to explore other styles of music. The Stranglers were, beginning in 1976, tangentially associated with punk rock, due in part to their opening for The Ramones’ first British tour. The Stranglers were also associated with new wave music as well as gothic rock, but their idiosyncratic approach never fit completely within a musical genre.

Style:        Grindcore

I’ve never been someone who would typically be described as “a man of few words,” but I’ve got a buddy who certainly fits that bill. Most of his communication comes in short and direct statements, little bursts of words with no extraneous information; all killer, no filler, straight to the point. So when he does speak, you should pay attention, because it’s bound to be important, or hilarious, or both. And when he deigns to use a lot of words, when he sees fit to break his own code of semi-silence to relay more than just a handful of syllables… well, you’re in for a treat, my friend.

The Czech grind wizards in Lycanthrophy are a bit like that. In just over a quarter century of existence, they’ve put forth the usual flurry of splits, controlled bursts of fast-fury madness that hit hard and full-on, directly to the point at hand – thirty-plus shortform releases over the span of their run, so far. And, conversely, in those 26 years now, they’ve expanded beyond those bursts into lengthier efforts… well, twice now that we’re adding this one to 2010’s self-titled. (A quick aside: That self-titled effort has some awesome album art, with a metalhead zombie dismembering a money-waving normie, so it’s further fun that Apocalypse follows suit with its own cartoonish cover, giving that metalhead zombie plenty of friends with whom to enjoy a relaxing evening of blastbeats and brain-eating.)

In the decade-plus since that first full-length, vocalist Zdisha departed, and bassist Supin moved to guitar and took over the mic fully, having previously contributed dueling vocals. Zdisha’s rabid bark was a highlight of earlier Lycanthrophy releases, but Supin compensates brilliantly, running through a gamut of vocal styles, from higher-pitched rasps to a bellowing death growl to a choked, almost power-violence-y shout, that variety of voices adding further layers of depth to the band’s stop-start frantic bashing and stout riffage.

Apocalypse explodes out of the gate with “Pride,” Supin roaring atop a hammering rhythm, the band locked tight as it resolves into a lightning-fast stutter. “Everyday Hate” slows down to thrashing by the end, a punky rollicking raucousness picked up on again in follow-up track “Wasteland,” though both find plenty of time for grinding. With just over half its eighteen tracks coming in under one minute in length, On The Verge Of Apocalypse is a blink-and-you-miss-plenty affair – Lycanthrophy is great at cramming subtle riff shifts and rhythmic accents inside their relentless cacophony. “1000 Years Old Dust” is another highlight, from a bouncy opening rhythm to some truly carving middle riffs; at the mid-album point, “Who Is The Judge?” slows down… for about ten seconds, and then… well, you get it… grindcore. If you don’t love it, then Lycanthrophy’s not for you, but then again, if you don’t love grindcore, what the hell’s wrong with you? If the head-twisting wallop of “Hypocrisy” and “Roots Of Evil” and the chugging crush of “Enlightenment” doesn’t spin you up into a tizzy, well… I can’t help you.

Like certain broods of cicadas and comets and Cleveland Browns playoff wins, Lycanthrophy full-lengths are a rare occurrence, so we’re blessed to be living in the day of a second one. Sit back and listen because you know whatever is coming, it’s bound to be worth the wait. Come in for the cover zombies; stay for the head-bashing blastbeats. Grind your way to the Apocalypse (*Review by Andrew Edmunds ).
