HIS HERO IS GONE

"fifteen counts of arson"
Year:  1997
Country:  US
City:  Memphis, TE
Label:  Prank
Format:  CD, LP
Tracs:  15
Time:  35 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Power Violence

Crust punk band from Memphis, Tennessee, active between 1995 and 1999. Their lyrics focused around a myriad of topics, such as racism in modern America, paranoia, poverty, forced institutionalization, anti-consumerism, and political anarchism. They were also known for their questioning of technology and their lack of any formal online presence.

15 Counts of Arson Review by Paul Kott. His Hero Is Gone was one of a small handful of standouts among the gamut of crust bands of the late '90s. Like many bands playing music in this vein, including fellow southerners and contemporaries Damad, His Hero Is Gone's albums were recorded and produced far from home in the notorious punk rock Mecca of Oakland, CA. Dan Rathburn did a great job recording the 15 songs included on the vinyl version of Fifteen Counts of Arson on 16 tracks at Polymorph, a fairly common studio choice for many bands in this genre. This CD also includes the first material produced by His Hero Is Gone, nine songs recorded by Noah Landis at Oakland's Guerrilla Euphonics. While the first 7" was very well received, the Fifteen Counts of Arson LP firmly established His Hero Is Gone on the streets as a band of note, alongside Damad, Dystopia (not to be confused with pop-punk band Dystopia One) and 1332. Dissonant melody, bludgeoning guitars, and well-done but rather stereotypical gruff vocals define a solid and consistent sound and approach through both of these recordings. The ambiance of the music effectively evokes the lyrical themes chronicling social, institutional, and mental collapse, the pain and hardship of living, and a revolutionary reaction to the banality and restriction of daily life in American culture. Although not the most original band at the time, His Hero Is Gone was sincere, and the music represented on both this CD and on the second LP, Monuments to Thieves, made a significant impact in the underground punk community of the late '90s.

Originally formed in 1978, D.O.A. has been led from the beginning by singer/guitarist Joe Keithley, (aka Joey Shithead), who has been joined by a wide variety of other bandmates through the years (including future Black Flag, Danzig, Social Distortion drummer Chuck Biscuits), although guitarist Dave Gregg was present for much of the hijinks up until 1990. The same year as their formation, D.O.A. issued a debut EP, Disco Sucks, before following it up with a pair of full-lengths that many longtime fans consider D.O.A.'s classic recordings, 1980s Something Better Change and 1981's Hardcore '81 (a popular compilation of both releases plus early tracks reared its head in 1984, as Bloodied But Unbowed). Since the beginning Keithley has been unafraid to voice his political opinions (a renowned D.O.A. slogan among their faithful is "TALK-ACTION= 0"), which at one point, landed him in jail. D.O.A. would go on to sporadically issue albums throughout the '80s and '90s (including such highlights as 1982's War on 45, 1985's The Dawning of a New Error, 1993's Loggerheads, etc.). The group also found time to collaborate with another outspoken punk leader, former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra, on 1990s Last Scream of the Missing Neighbors. Like Biafra before him, Keithley took the plunge and attempted to enter politics, running as a candidate in Canadian provincial and civic elections for the Green Party in 1996. Keithley also runs his own indie record company, Sudden Death Records, and issued an autobiography in late 2003, titled I, Shithead: A Life in Punk. D.O.A. continues strong to this day, as evidenced by such releases as 2002's Win the Battle. As a result of Keithley's hard work, D.O.A. is often name-checked as an important influence by other hardcore/punk bands, including such notables as Green Day, the Offspring, Rancid, and Propagandhi, among others (by Greg Prato ).

"murder"
Year:  1990
Label:  Restless
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  12
Time:  40 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Hard Rock

By the time of this 1990 release, D.O.A. was quite a distance from their peak '80s form. The best years were behind them, for sure, but the Canadian rockers still had plenty left to say. Sonically, there's nothing surprising about "murder". The songs are perhaps a little more political than most of their '80s issue material, but only voracious lyric-readers will notice the difference. Highlights include the rambunctious "the agony and the ecstasy" and a truly sinister cover version of "the midnight special" that is probably the record's best cut. The world of bands had already witnessed several generational shifts before this Restless Records offering hit the streets, and even more new artists were waiting on deck, as the punk landscape would quickly become overcrowded with bands who might not even have heard of D.O.A. In such a competitive climate, it's good to know that this traditional hard rocck with some punk touches. outfit had the courage to stick to their early format so many years after their commercial heyday. Definitely an essential album, which has superb production and brilliant sound quality.

I am not going to argue that describing this conglomeration of politically like-minded individuals is difficult. In fact, I’ll admit that it’s pretty damn easy. Look at the name; Jello Biafra and the Melvins. Jello Biafra brings humorously scathing lyrics and a unique vocal styling while the Melvins, along with Tool guitarist Adam Jones deliver sometimes sludgy but mostly punk riffs. Call it honest advertising.

Sieg Howdy! is the group’s second outing and its ten tracks consist of four song types; one extended version of a song from their debut, two cover songs, four exclusive tracks, and three remixed versions of songs from their debut. As slapped together as this album reads, you’ll find that it all works rather seamlessly. Jumping from an Alice Cooper cover (“Halo of Flies”) to the extended track “The Lighter Side of Global Terrorism” does not require a comfortably schizophrenic state of mind. Speaking of the former, Biafra and his instrumental cohorts do Cooper right by maintaining the original’s attitude and addictive, driving riff while playing with the vocal delivery enough to distinguish the two. The extended track is the most disposable of the ten tracks because the original was a punk song and adding three minutes to the original’s four makes it three minutes too long. That said, if you don’t have the original you won’t see it as the throwaway that it is to those who own Never Breathe What You Can’t See. “Kalifornia Uber Alles” joins “Halo of Flies” to round out Sieg Howdy’s! covers. A live recording of Biafra and the Melvins playing a Dead Kennedy’s staple, the song could have sounded stale, but Osborne throws in some sludge influences to give it a life of its own and make it one of the album’s stronger songs. The last three tracks from What You Can’t See are remixed with interesting results. Strange synth beats aren’t just thrown into the mix for the hell of it, which is what I had initially feared. Well, “Dawn of the Locusts” comes close to that, but “Enchanted Thoughtfist” and “Caped Crusader” improve on the originals by adding layers that strengthen the character of Osborne’s riffs.

The four songs exclusive to Sieg Howdy! should not surprise anyone in possession of What You Can’t See, as they don’t stray too far from the punk meets sludge territory established by the original, which is fine by me. Melvins fans will find “Wholly Bun Bull” and “Voted Off the Island” especially to their liking, as both briefly incorporate a sludge riff or two, but anyone offended by speedier material should be warned that Sieg Howdy! is about three parts punk and one part sludge. “Those Dumb Punk Kids (Will Buy Anything)” is not only the strongest of the exclusive tracks, but also the strongest of any track on the album as a whole. Riffs come fast and Biafra lets loose with a diatribe that name-drops everyone from Nirvana to Black Flag.

Often times supergroups like Jello Biafra and the Melvins produce uninspired material that falls short of pleasing fan expectations, but for the second time Biafra, Osborne, Jones, Rutmanis, and Crover manage to record an album’s worth of sarcastic, intelligent, uncompromising, and fun music.

"angel of retribution"

After the 1990 album, ‘Painkiller’, Rob Halford left Judas Priest and the band continued on for 11 years with the singer Tim “Ripper” Owens. Rob went on and did his own thing whether it was the band Fight, Two or band Halford. Judas Priest did two albums with Ripper during this time, but the fans were screaming for Halford and Priest to reunite. Rob had wanted that for a long time, but was too afraid to reach out (at least that is what he says in his book). However, eventually it happened. Rob Halford was to rejoin Priest and in 2003, it finally happened.

Judas Priest toured a little and then went in to the studio to record their new album ‘Angel of Retribution’. They recorded from October to December of 2004 and the album was finally released on February 23, 2005 and to quite acclaim. It went to #13 on the Billboard 200 Charts and Priest were back. Rob brought over Roy Z as the producer who also mixed and engineered the album as well. Roy Z was the guitar player in Rob’s band Halford and he produced several of those albums as well.

I read somewhere that the album artwork was a continuation of the angel from ‘Sad Wings of Destiny’. This time the angel has transformed in to steel as she is rising out of the ashes and becoming the angel of retribution. Who knows if that is true, but cool to think that it is a reference to that album.

After 11 years apart, what would the new Priest sound like was the question of the day. Judas Priest would come out and deliver a massively heavy album and usher their sound in to the 21st Century! Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, K.K. Downing, Ian Hill and Scott Travis are ready to rock.

The album opens with the song “Judas Rising” and Judas is the angel from Sad Wings of Destiny, Painkiller and this album cover. You could take it as Priest saying they were back from the ashes ready to rock the world again. The song opens with heavy guitars, double-kick drum mayhem and a massive scream from Halford announcing the return of the classic line-up. The song is immense and powerful with Halford attacking the lyrics with all his might and how Scott Travis on drums can continue the pummeling of the kick drums for that long is beyond me. The band explodes out of the gates of hell with such destructive force and the excitement is building for what is to come.

“Deal with the Devil” is a song that tells the story about the band’s story and takes you back to the Black Country where they started to the metal gods they are today. Another heart pounding song and a very catchy chorus. Not as hard as the opener and a little more melodic. This is the only song that Roy Z had a co-write on, otherwise, it is still Halford, Tipton and Downing at the helm. Towards the back half of the album and on several more songs, Halford hits some notes that sound a lot like Axl Rose from Guns ‘N Roses and I mean that in a very good way. The solo on this is incredibly fast and frantic and I think is a dual solo for Tipton and Downing. A great exclamation point on an already great song.

This might be a first for the band, a bass line opening by Ian Hill. I am not sure if they’ve done that before. The Rob scream at the beginning has been done before but to have Ian front and center is a nice change. The song is really different than what I would’ve expected. “Revolution” is probably the most radio-friendly song on the album and has a ton of Rob’s screams, a simple guitar riff and at times the song is a little cheesy, but it is catchy enough. Sometimes strange is good. A fact about that opening bass as it is actually from a cassette tape that they recorded that riff on back in the 70’s. They uploaded it to pro tools and built the song around it.

“Worth Fighting For” comes out and sounds a lot like old school Priest…well maybe early 80’s Priest anyway. A simple drum beat and Rob singing softly at the opening. A slower tempo almost a ballad, but not quite. The guitar solo is great and fitting for the song and not over-the-top. I find the song to be quite pleasant and and a nice unexpected twist in style and vibe. They are keeping you on your toes with this album.

“Demonizer” brings back the heavy and the darkness. With a killer riff to open the song and more of Scott’s double kick drum madness. The song could’ve been straight off Painkiller as it has that tone. Rob sounds great here and he sounds so menacing and evil fitting for a song called “Demonizer”. Another assault on the senses and turn it up to 11 so you get the full effect of those guitars and drums as they pummel your ears and you love every minute of it.

The next song opens with what sounds like a Van Halen riff, listen closely. “Wheels of Fire” will take you back to the ‘Screaming for Vengeance’ era and make all you 80’s Priest fans very happy as it would feel right at home in that era. It isn’t the heavy, destructive force as the beginning of the album, but you need a break form that and this one will give you all the good feels of 80’s Priest and I am good with that feeling.

Then we get a true ballad with the song “Angel”. I think this might be one of the best ballads they had done. Rob’s vocals on this might be the best of the album. His vocals are smooth at times and full of emotion and it is just him and an acoustic guitar for most of the song. It has a very melancholy tone and is actually quite moving. The bass comes in around the middle and then some electric guitars for the solo. The drums to come in towards the end and brings the full band in to play. It is a beautifully constructed song and might be the best song on the album…who am I kidding, it is the best song on the album.

The heavy is brought back with the speed demon of a song, “Hellrider”. The guitar opening is incredible and then the destructiveness of Scott’s drums come in followed by Rob’s evil vocals and the band is fire. If you are a fan of the last album with Rob, ‘Painkiller’, then this song will be right up your alley. I think my ears started to bleed from listening to this and I couldn’t be happier. It is an evil beast and a great way to end the album. Well, I say that because the last two songs are complete and utter trash so this is the end of the album for me.

“Eulogy” is up first and I guess this might be the opening to the horrific song “Lochness”, but if not, I will review as a stand alone. It is a slow tempo song but where “Angel” was emotive and done perfectly, this song falls flat and I found lacked emotion and was quite dull in comparison. The piano seems to play on with no real direction and keeps repeating the same notes over and over. Rob sounds bored and not sure how to sing it. Move on.

The final track on the album is the longest one at 13 minutes. “Lochness” is about old Nessie and I am not sure what they were going for here. Are they trying to go back to their early prog roots or what I am not sure. The song is heavy and feels very evil and there are some musical moments I like, but overall it lacks so much. The song is cheesy at times and when Rob hits the chorus, oh man, shoot me now it is so bad. I think the song is trying to be more than it can be as there aren’t enough shining moments to lift it above its dreariness. Now you know why I say the album ends at “Hellrider” (*Review from HERE ).
