SHAM 69 formed in Hersham, Surrey in 1976 (the 12 November issue of NME notes they are rehearsing at this time, although only Jimmy Pursey would remain from this early line-up 12 months later). SHAM 69 lacked the art school background of many british punk bands of the time, and brought in football chant back-up vocals and a sort of inarticulate political populism related to working class, english identity, etc. The band had a large skinhead following (left wing, right wing and "apolitical"), which helped set the tone for the Oi! movement. They played in the famous "Rock Against Racism" concert but their live concerts were notoriously plagued by violence and the band ceased live performances after one of their gigs at Middlesex Polytechnic in 1978 was broken up by National Front skinheads fighting and rushing the stage. Late 1979 the band was dissolved after recorded four albums in just two years. But in 1988 Pursey and guitarist David Parsons reformed the band, joined by new personnel just for three years and recorded "Volunteer", an atempt to make mainstream hard-rock, which became a complete commercial failure. Although subsequently going through a number of lineup changes and stops, SHAM 69 remained more or less active and is still playing live shows until nowadays.

Some months later but still in 1978, Sham 69 recorded its second album which had similar succes and popularity as its predecessor. Strictly musical the band made a fistful of good songs in the same style as its debut, with the difference that they incorporated a lot of spoken words, jokes and parodies at the beggining and the end of the songs. That's Life is a concept album released in 1978 by English punk rock band, Sham 69. The album had two hit singles, "Hurry Up Harry" reaching chart position 10 in UK and "Angels With Dirty Faces", reaching 19 the same year. The album reached position 27, bettering the previous album Tell Us The Truth by 2 positions. In 1989 That's Life was re-released as a double-LP, That's Life as the other side, the other being their first album Tell Us The Truth.

"Hersham boys"
Year:  1979
Country:  UK
Label:  Universal Music
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  10
Time:  33 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        New Wave

The name of "Sham 69" itself made reference to 1969, aka sixties, rude boys and mods. And this sixties influence is noticeably visible in this third album entitled "Hersham boys". Bands such: The Beatles (early), The Who, The Kinks, Small Faces, Creation, The Animals or The Troggs, could be a real source in the Sham 69 creativity and their music is full of keyboards, sounds and effects which can to remind mod music, psychedelic rock or simply pop. Some kind of mix which in some reviews and articles is described as "new wave"...

"soapy water and marmalade"
Year:  1995
Country:  UK
City:  London
Label:  A Plus Eye
Format:  CD
Tracks:  10
Time:  38 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:         Pop Punk

After a long periode of inactivity from 1979 to 1995, except the three years that the band recorded "volunteer", a quite unknown and commercially failure album, Sham 69 come back with this "Soapy water and mister marmalade", which fortunately return to their roots more punk rock and mod pop oriented. Yes, actually this is a mix of pop and punk, an hybrid very popular mid 90's decade, and in fact the result was very good. Good songs could be "Otis Redding", "Little bit of this" or a The Doors cover (extract from its predesesor album) "Break on through". Perhaps not an essential 90s album but not bad at all and a good way to listen to Sham 69 making soft melodies, clear voices and clean production. The album has been re-issued three times trought three record labels until nowadays. In France was issued with a different artwork, cover and back... truly urgly which you can see HERE .

"direct action: day 21"
Year:  2001
Country:  UK
Label:  The Store of Music
Format:  CD
Tracks:  14
Time:  36 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Pop Punk

This is not the first time Sham 69 sound closer to pop music, they already recorded their third album "The adventures of hersham boys" (1979) and also "soapy water and mister marmalade" (1995), which Jimmy Pursey and company writen and recorded punk rock songs with strong pop influences, melodies and optimistic lyrics. Sham 69 liked and still like 60's music such as: mod music, british invasion, psychedelic rock and classic pop, with bands like: The Who, Small Faces, Creation or The Kinks. In fact mods, hard-mods and skinheads are all of them the same branch in the evolution of sub-cultures related to young people, new generations, etc. This "Direct action" had not much succes in the moment of its issue, in 2001. But it seem with the pass of the years public and medias got more interest for this band and its discography. Despite this is a good album, it exist an only one issue and just on CD format.
