Former enfant terrible of installation art John Duncan's fascination lies in what can be learned when we are pushed beyond extremes. His past work involved his own total immersion in acts of shocking transgression, holding the least forgiving of mirrors up to his audience; his recent sound art is a calmer reflection on similar themes. Elliott Sharp's extraordinary prowess across a vast range of musical disciplines is well known. TONGUE sees the pair exploring the limits of the human voice through rigorous processing, which exposes its natural grain (Sharp's throat-produced harmonics sounding particularly startling) while simultaneously spinning it into complex, spellbinding patterns. Weaving among these lie the modulated voice signals from shortwave radio. The fascinating results suggest a strange universal language of the soul, mysteriously encoded in the very physiognomy that dictates vocal production (*NOTE = this review was written by Keith Moliné, The Wire ).

First of all, take any idea of wearing headphones out of the equation: the best - the ONLY - way to penetrate this work is to let its powerful frequency stream fill your listening space. Walk around the room, like you were a visitor of the installation; the distant sexual sighs - taken from Duncan's erotic videos - and the distorted and elongated Japanese phrases pronounced by John himself, almost akin to a mechanical sound, will also constitute a basic element in the timbral aspect of "Stun shelter". All this contributes to that body/mind function vacancy that seems to be one of the constant results of both Duncan and Von Hausswolff's long history of experiments. After listening several times I consider this work as a sort of reflection by the authors, as if they wanted to put a summary of their vision together, opening a door for many people who were left way back years ago and are now willing to deepen their knowledge of John and Carl Michael's art. The music of "Stun shelter" will be a pleasant reminder for the ones who were there of more than a new path to follow; that said, the quality of this release remains well high in the "too-easy-to-enter" area of trance/drone music linked with video and psychoacoustic phenomena. JOHN DUNCAN = Profile = From noise to conceptual installations, shortwave-radio to enviromental recordings, John Duncan has been one of the most consistently confrontational, powerful, and compelling masters of experimentation of the last twenty years. Since 2001, Duncan has been releasing his records through his own label "All Questions Records". The label, based in Italy, has been quietly building up a catalogue of highly regarded recordings. Over the years, Duncan has worked on many rewarding collaborations: 'Incoming' with Christoph Heemann, 'Contact' with Andrew McKenzie (of the Hafler Trio), and most recently 'Da Sich Die Machtgier' with Asmus Tietchens. Other than on his own label, Duncan has released records on labels such as Touch, Die Stadt and Heemann's own Streamline label. Packaged in a 5x8" heavy brown paper folder. An 8 page booklet of pictures and liner notes inside. Reissue by "All Questions records". TAGS: abstract and experimental noise.
