MERZBOW

"escape mask"
Year:  2017
Country:  Japan
Label:  Cold Spring
Format:  CD , LP
Tracks:  4
Time:  45min.
Genre:  electronic, acoustic
Style:        Noise         Lo-Fi

The newest Merzbow release is in fact one of his oldest recordings, so the master of this album was made and recorded in 1983. In some releases appeared five tracks in other four tracks (because the first ones are together), but the album is the same and keep the same bizarre mix which made Merzbow with instruments such as: guitar, violin, drum machine (rhythm Box), tapes manipulation, noises and many other effects. The release was issued in 1983 through label "ZSF" and in 2017 through "Other Voices" and "Cold Spring" (in the distribution work). Is frankly weird and lo-fi, but at the same time interessant, meditative... even fun.

"Sun Ra remixed"
Year:  2016
Country:  Japan
Label:  Cold Spring
Format:  CD , LP
Tracks:  2
Time:
Genre:  electronic
Style:        Noise         Free Jazz

This is a deformed mix of Sun Ra's "Strange strings" and "The magic city" plus some Merzbow materials, effects, sounds and noises. The result is a balance between electronic extreme noise and acoustic free jazz. Two long tracks, thrity inutes each one, released on CD, LP and yellow vinyl through british label "Cold Spring" in a limited edition. Officially licensed from Irwin Chusid of the SUN RA estate, Cold Spring’s Justin Mitchell negotiated rare and unreleased tracks from the SUN RA archive to be remixed and treated by Masami Akita. The tracks incorporate the jazz power of SUN RA, carried into brutal excess by the legendary Japanese artist, Merzbow. This release is available in two distinct editions: 180gm black vinyl, with a limited 200 only for Cold Spring mailorder on yellow vinyl, both with download code – and a matt laminated digipak CD. Please note that both formats have completely different music

GARETH DAVIS & MERZBOW
"Atsusaku"
Year:  2016
Country:  Japan , Netherlands
Label:  Moving Furniture
Format:  LP
Edition:  300
Tracks:  2
Time:  37 min.
Genre:  electronic , acoustic
Style:        Noise        Free Jazz

A complete winner here from electronics harsh noise wizard Masami Akita and free jazz clarinet musician Gareth Davis both together grace to an unknown (for me) label called "Moving Furniture Records" (I recommend to check out its catalogue here below). The music is some of the most chaotic that I have heard from Mr. Akita, a panoramic kaleidoscope of metal machine noise and acoustic free jazz and free imprcovisation music. This is the 360 degree apocalypse of the mind. The Merz is letting loose. This is a man who has reorded a lot of music in his lifetime. I would be very surprised if Merzbow himself is able to keep track of the vast volume of material that he has put out over the years. Sometimes, you don't really remember it after listening a few times. This one is really dramatic and sticks in my mind very clearly. I can very distinctly remember the first time that I listened to it while driving. The music is meant to echo the reality of the destruction of Eucalyptus trees, which is apparently a very terrible problem on the Earth that is disrupting the ecosystem. I can accept that, and it doesn't hurt that this story was told to me via this amazing release. I don't use to listen to free jazz and similars, but here you have two musical styles together, mixed. Enjoy it

Merzbow (メルツバウ Merutsubau) is the stage name of musician Masami Akita Noise (Masami Akita 秋田 昌 美). Since 1979 he has released more than 350 albums on different independent record labels. The name "Merzbow" comes from a work by German artist Kurt Schwitters, called "Merzbau". This was chosen to reflect Akita's dada influence and junk art aesthetic. In addition to this, Akita has cited a wide range of influences from progressive rock, free jazz, modern and classical, musique concrète, BDSM and Japanese bondage. More recently, he has been inspired by animals, animal rights and environmentalism. Besides being a prolific musician, he has also written 17 books and contributions, and has been editor of several magazines in Japan. He has written on a variety of topics, mostly about art, avant-garde and post-modern culture. His most famous works have been on the topics of BDSM and fetish culture. Akita has been interested in other art forms such as paintings, photography, films and Butoh danceAnd unlike many European noise projects, which are characterized by their acttudes wild, violent and almost stupid, Merzbow Japanese embodies the most cultured, polite, quiet and elegant.

One recording more of this japanese noise musician which sound more or less like other works. The difference is this album was benefit to fight against japanese hunters of whales. All people know already the MERZBOW ideas about environment defense, animal rights, etc. He started in music using artwork for his albums related to: violence, bondage, porn, etc. but in the 90s decade he became vegan and to show his own ideas in his covers, backs and artwork of his albums.

Label:  Relapse
Format:  CD
Tracks:  4
Time:  50 min.
Genre:  electronic
Style:        Harsh Noise

I completly ignore the reasons, but this "Venereology" use to be the favourite MERZBOW album for those people who like extreme heavy metal and / or extreme punk hardcore music. At point in 2004 the label "Relapse Records" (specialized in extreme punk, hardcore, grindcore and similar musical styles) decided to make, promote and distribute this album. Strictly musically is a classic MERZBOW album, full of extreme electronic noise, abrasive noise or simply harsh noise. Four tracks (two of them of nine minutes and the first, twenty two minutes duration) and a cover design close to death metal bands, with skulls, skelethons, etc.
